Death of a Reef (North Shore)

$1,750.00

Coral bleaching is caused by increasing ocean temperatures which stresses the symbiotic relationship between the coral’s food, algae, and coral tissue. To create the texture and colour of dying coral reefs, Kim Leckey weaves up-cycled plastic bags, marine debris, and recycled cotton rope, using an up-cycled frame as a loom. In this work, Leckey uses weaving techniques such as traditional tabby, soumak, rya, and twinning to create the intricate details of the sea floor.

Medium and Substrate: recycled cotton rope, upcycled plastic bags, upcycled wood frame

Finished Dimensions: 45.5” x 31”
